Koncept romanizacije, koji unutar arheologije i istorije predstavlja osnovni okvir za tumačenje kontakata između rimskog i „varvarskih“ društava, temelji se na antičkim literarnim izvorima sa jedne, i idejama sociokulturne evolucije sa druge strane. Prilikom tumačenja karaktera ljudskih društava antički autori su upotrebljavali narativ o „stepenu ljudskosti“ pomoću kojeg su vrednovali različita socijalna ustrojstva u odnosu na sopstveno, dok teorija sociokulturne evolucije podrazumeva postojanje stepena razvoja ljudskih društva, od varvarstva do civilizacije. U radu se skreće pažnja na postojanje mogućnosti da su antičke ideje o različitosti društvenih zajednica uticale na formiranje osnovnih postulata sociokulturne evolucije da bi, zatim, oba narativa bila korišćena u stvaranju koncepta romanizacije.
