La culture matérielle dans l’œuvre d’Hérodote: entre mémoire et texte

Dans son œuvre complexe et multiforme, Hérodote d’Halicarnasse mentionne un grand nombre de vestiges de culture matérielle de différentes sortes. Ces matérialités sont, en règle générale, associées à certaines histoires isolées du passé que le père de l’histoire intègre dans son récit et leur attribue une place et un but dans l’ensemble de son œuvre. Étant donné que ces matérialités et les histoires qui leur sont associées apparaissent dans les contextes sociaux et culturels différents, nous soulignerons leurs implications politiques et idéologiques par rapport à la société qui les conserve et les transmet. Cependant, Hérodote lui-même n’était pas libéré des cadres et perspectives culturels et idéologiques, ce qui s’est particulièrement manifesté dans sa description d’autres peuples – Égyptiens, Scythes et Perses – qu’il essayait de rapprocher de son public hellénique et de son cadre culturel et idéologique. Par conséquent, dans la deuxième partie de l’article nous mettrons en évidence l’importance et le rôle de la culture matérielle dans le contexte de la représentation de l’autre par Hérodote.
